Using a slow-cooker: Hawaiian chicken

But Mr. Food Aisle was a good sport, doing his best to feign sincere interest and support when I was struggling to make crucial life decisions, like whether to go with the oval or rectangle serving dish. After one excruciating trip when I held him hostage for over 20 minutes just analyzing napkin rings, I asked him whether there was some type of manly gadget out there he would like. 

He answered immediately: "A flat-screen TV."

After I gently broke the news that a large flat-screen wasn't really ... appropriate ... he decided on a slow cooker.

At family parties growing up, slow cookers always held the meatballs or baked beans on the buffet table. In my mind, these large, clunky contraptions served two purposes: keeping an uninventive side dish warm for hours, or  preparing a hearty, easy-to-cook man meal for one he could eat when I was working late. 

Distrust, suspicion, antipathy ... these are all feelings I once had for our slow cooker, pictured above. I am now growing to appreciate it.But in the year since the slow cooker landed in our kitchen, Mr. Food Aisle has proved me wrong. Here's one of his recipes that turned out especially good, combining two flavors I love together:  tangy teriyaki sauce and sweet pineapple. It's perfect for the summer, paired with a cold beer or an icy margarita.

• Slow cooker

INGREDIENTS 

• 1 bottle teriyaki sauce, found in the grocery store with marinades
• 1/2 pineapple, cut into chunks, or 1 can of chopped pineapple, juices reserved
• Chicken, cut of your choice: 2 legs, 2-4 breasts or 4 thighs 
• Cooked rice, for serving (It absorbs the juices and rounds out the meal nicely)

1. Combine chicken, sauce and pineapple in slow cooker and cook on high heat for 3-4 hours
2. Serve on a bed of the cooked rice
